Reasons

And so we get to what really matters… Sesshoumaru and Kikyou as a couple...why should it happen?

It is my opinion that there are three main general reasons why Sess/Kik fans (yes, they are out there, I know that!) first became fans of that pairing. They are:

1 – Kikyou and Sesshoumaru are their favorite characters and they happen to also think they’d look really good together.

Hey, it happens, right? Especially if they like both, Kikyou and Kagome, but think Kagome should get Inuyasha. In that case, they wouldn’t like seeing Kikyou all alone, so they think she should be with their favorite youkai dog, Sesshoumaru, and then everyone would be happy and have someone to love! The perfect picture for those who are suckers for happy endings! Aww^^

2 – Kikyou and Sesshoumaru are their most hated characters because they’re both very evil, so they’d make a good match.

We all know most people really hate Kikyou, and there are some people who don’t like Sesshoumaru either (not to mention that I’ve seen some people say “RIN MUST DIE!!!” How mean is that?). Those people then think they should be together because that’s exactly what they deserve, since they’d make each other’s lives miserable. I mean, Sesshoumaru would get stuck with an undead human who smells like dirt and bones, Kikyou would go crazy having to take on a heartless, cold youkai that barely talks and Rin would have the weirdest and meanest parents ever! Now isn’t that perfect for Kikyou/Sesshoumaru/Rin haters?

3 – They think Sesshoumaru and Kikyou’s personalities are quite alike, since they’re both so lonely and kinda cold, so maybe they could teach each other how to love.

Probably the most reasonable of all three. Whoever hasn’t noticed that Kikyou and Sesshoumaru are pretty alike should watch the anime/read the manga again… I mean, they both seem cold, heartless and evil, but they do have a good, caring side. Also, it doesn’t seem like any of them has had a good, happy life so far, so maybe they could learn more about their own hidden hearts together and find some happiness in comforting and loving each other. After all, Kikyou has loved once, so it wouldn’t be so hard for her to love again…and Sesshoumaru…maybe he has his father’s heart, a youkai heart that was able to love and protect a human woman. Not to mention that they both have this love/hate thing for Inuyasha, which is totally cool, hehehe! ^-^

As I fit better in the third of the above groups, I shall, from now on, point out in details my personal reasons for supporting this couple and, hopefully, convert one or two people into Sessh/Kiky fans. ^^; They are:

1. Kikyou and Sesshoumaru are very lonely people, so maybe they could find some happiness together.
As much as the barrier these two have cast upon themselves might seem impenetrable, even they cannot remain lonely forever. Kikyou has proved that, for in one of the earlier episodes, she wishes she could simply live in the small village she was currently staying at, taking care of the villagers and entertaining the children, and so has Sesshoumaru, when he took Rin under his wing and since then has showed true fatherly concern for her. However, these emotions the taiyoukai hides carefully inside are rather complex, and only someone else going through the same sort of situation, such as Kikyou, would be able to understand and possibly love him, and vice versa, consequently filling their deserted hearts with warmth and joy.

2. Kikyou’s burning hate and Sesshoumaru’s cold attitude would form a natural balance, complementing each other.
Sesshoumaru, the arrogant and indifferent youkai surrounded in mistery, always thinking twice before taking a step; Kikyou, the passionate and rather impetuous miko, intent on her purpose of destroying the one who took her life. One has in excess what the other seems to lack. Together, they would learn to combine their strong points and come very close to nullifying their weaknesses. This way, the ever-methodical Sesshoumaru would find out that when you think too much before going into action, it might be a little too late, and Kikyou, that diving into something without previous thinking might be quite dangerous and imprudent.

3. Sesshoumaru is the older, stronger and more mature version of Inuyasha, as Kikyou is the older, stronger and more mature version of Kagome.
If people can enjoy the whole relationship between Kagome and Inuyasha because of their constant arguing, low maturity level and unexplainable kawaiiness in their own messed up ways, why can’t they do the same for the ‘grown up versions’ of those two? They would most likely have problems like Kagome and Inuyasha do, and would disagree with each other on many issues too; the only change is that they would solve their differences in a more mature way than telling the other to shut up or using some kind of wicked voice-activated punishment device… And just as Kagome and Inuyasha have strong feelings for each other in spite of their infantile behavior, Sesshoumaru and Kikyou would develop a solid bond despite their complex selves. And although some people claim that Kagome’s cheerful attitude is the only way to break through Sesshoumaru’s icy heart, I strongly believe that is not entirely true; it is my opinion that Kikyou’s serenity and sorrowful beauty could also soften the taiyoukai, not to mention that he would probably get annoyed at the reincarnated miko’s childish ways.

4. The bond the miko would develop with Rin could possibly come to Sesshoumaru’s attention, as well as her adoration for the youkai would attract Kikyou.
It is undeniable that Sesshoumaru has grown genuinely fond of the orphaned girl, as is incontestable the fact that Kikyou is a walking magnet for children and that they are indeed her soft spot. Rin would certainly grow on Kikyou and vice-versa, and that would cause Sesshoumaru to, at least, pay closer attention to the miko and her warm, kind ways towards his protégé, thus bringing him to look at her with different eyes, and by watching the little girl’s adoration and total devotion to the demon lord, Kikyou would eventually realize that, unlike what she was bound to think of him initially, he wasn’t such a bad person after all, otherwise the child would not love him that much. In addition, Rin could put on a good word about Kikyou to Sesshoumaru and vice-versa, therefore being a great way to hook the two of them up.

5. Sesshoumaru’s father fell in love with a human once; maybe the same could happen with him.
It is a rare thing for youkais and humans to be together, but it has happened before in Sesshoumaru’s family, precisely to his father, seemingly the only one the proud youkai respects. So who knows, maybe deep, deep inside, Sesshoumaru has a heart just like his father’s, and will eventually let a human woman reach through that icy barrier of his. So sure, this could also apply to Sessh/Kagome and Sessh/Rin, but frankly, Kagome is just not right for Sesshoumaru, and his feelings towards Rin are more of the fatherly type.

Now, some people may also claim that Kikyou isn’t exactly human anymore, seeing as she is dead and all, but she was a human when she was alive, not to mention that whatever soul she still has is essentially human. Besides, if she were to be brought back to life, say, if someone used a certain reviving sword on her, then she’d be a normal human again. Which brings us to the next topic…

6. Kikyou and her current state as a dead person; Sesshoumaru and the magical, reviving sword.
If you think about it… Sesshoumaru has Tenseiga, and Kikyou is dead… Don’t you think it’s too much of a coincidence…? Sesshoumaru’s father was very wise, and he had his reasons for giving Inuyasha Tetsusaiga while his half-brother was left with Tenseiga: he probably knew both his sons weren’t too fond of humans, but the swords would somewhat ‘force’ them to learn to appreciate humankind; Tetsusaiga, a sword that can only be used properly if its bearer had the will to protect someone other than himself, would make the gruff Inuyasha care for his future human friends, while Tenseiga, which could only be used by someone with a good-willed heart, would make the arrogant Sesshoumaru have a new value for life and learn to love people other than himself. Also, Inutaishou seemed to have predicted his sons’ future: he knew Inuyasha’s youkai blood would, someday, be unleashed and eventually corrupt the hanyou’s heart, so he gave him the Steel Fang sword, which would prevent such a thing from happening. He also seemed to know that Sesshoumaru, by underestimating his brother’s power, would get seriously wounded during a fight between the two and would need Tenseiga’s powers to save his life, as well as reviving Rin, the first human to ever touch his heart and make a difference in his life. Maybe the great Taishou could have also foreseen that a certain miko, the only woman able to stir some strong feelings in Sesshoumaru, would need Tenseiga more than anyone else…

7. Kikyou seems to have a ‘thing’ for silver-haired youkais with golden eyes…
Now, I’m not saying that Kikyou would be that shallow as to falling for Sesshoumaru only for his looks; however, the uncanny resemblance between the taiyoukai and his half-brother would probably be one of the first things she would notice about him, and while this small detail could actually cause Kikyou to hate Sesshoumaru at first for reminding her so much of Inuyasha, in time she would realize that, in spite of their physical alikeness, their personalities differ greatly. Sesshoumaru’s elegance, intelligence and placidness, as well as his composed, serene ways would get to the miko’s attention, and she would eventually realize that he is the type of man that fits her own personality better.

8. They both have a rather cold and mean exterior, but deep inside, they have good hearts.
We all know Sesshoumaru and Kikyou are not as bad as they would like everyone to believe they are. Ever since bringing Rin back to life, Sesshoumaru does not seem as cruel as he was before, and he sure does care a lot for the girl, asking her if she had behaved and risking his neck to protect her, just like a father would do. As for Kikyou… can anyone deny how goody-goody she gets when she’s around children? She plays with them, takes care of them, teaches them about medicinal herbs… They try so hard to look evil so that their enemies will respect and fear them, but sometimes, even they have flukes… Another similar aspect in their personalities that could only bring them together.

9. Kikyou deserves better than the two-timing Inuyasha; Sesshoumaru better.
As cute and sweet as it might be to think of the relationship Kikyou and Inuyasha shared in the past, we should face it; it was over the moment the hanyou was pinned to the Goshinboku and the miko died. And as much as I may personally adore Inuyasha, I have to admit it annoys me beyond comprehension when he goes from Kagome to Kikyou, then from Kikyou to Kagome and so on, so on… It makes me wanna scream “Just pick one, dammit!!!” And yes, I do love Inuyasha, but Kikyou is, by far, my favorite character, and she deserves better than him. She needs someone who stays loyal to her, a one-woman’s man, and that man is Sesshoumaru! So far, he’s a “no-woman’s man”, so when he finally finds that one special person, he’ll most likely be faithful and love her and her only.

10. Rin needs, at least, one female, human company around her.
As much as she may love Sesshoumaru’s company and enjoy playing around with Jaken, Rin must miss talking to other humans like her, especially of the female gender Kikyou would be perfect for that, for not only is she a human woman, but also has incredible maternal instincts; just take it from how she acts around little children and you’ll understand what I’m talking about. Kikyou truly loves kids, but she never had the chance to have a child of her own; Rin has lost all her family, but she could see in Kikyou a new motherly figure, just as she found a father in Sesshoumaru, and the three abandoned and lonesome creatures could form a happy family together, having Jaken as their pet toad, of course.

11. Both keep saying they want to/will kill Inuyasha, but they never do so when given the chance.
Kikyou “hates” Inuyasha because he betrayed her by staying with her reincarnation and wants to kill and drag him to hell with her; Sesshoumaru “hates” Inuyasha for having been left the Tetsusaiga and for being a hanyou, claiming that he will kill him for that. Have any of them actually kept true to their vows? No. Both have had many opportunities to put an end to Inuyasha’s life, and yet, the hanyou is still pretty much alive. I believe that what those two feel towards Inuyasha isn’t exactly hate; it would be something akin to resentment. Kikyou felt disturbed and upset to rise from the dead and discover that her old lover had gotten over her quite easily, for he was already with someone else upon her resurrection, and Sesshoumaru has some difficulty in “forgiving” his father for having Inuyasha as his favorite son and for leaving him, a mere ‘half-breed’, the legendary Tetsusaiga. Alone, they’re slowly letting these differences behind, but together, maybe one could show the other that there’s no real reason for so much upset and bitterness towards the hanyou.

12. They make such a cute couple! ^-^;
Not the biggest, most convincing reason of all, but it’s still true. I guess no one can deny that Kikyou is a very beautiful young maiden, and that Sesshoumaru is ultra charming, in his own slightly feminine ways (hence the large number of rabid fangirls squealing every time he comes into scene). Now put the two of them together and you get one of the most gorgeous anime couples ever! Besides, in anime, good-looking characters go together, at least in all the series I have seen so far! And the most interesting aspect to be noticed here is that Kikyou’s unadorned, natural beauty, somehow matches with Sesshoumaru’s aristocratic, fancy style just perfectly!

13. As a miko and a taiyoukai, Kikyou and Sesshoumaru do differ in some aspects.
He is a tayoukai and, in spite of the calm, elegant way in which he usually presents himself, his deepest instincts are those of a wild, aggressive creature. She is a miko and, even though she can be rather hostile on occasion, she is good-willed, kind and compassionate by nature, as all mikos must be. Once together, one’s characteristics would create a balance with the other’s, a balance that is just essential for anyone who wants to build a solid, strong and long-lasting relationship, otherwise the combined flaws in their personalities would only torn the two apart each time more.

14. Kikyou didn’t have time to heal Inuyasha’s heart, but she could always heal Sesshoumaru’s.
In the past, Kikyou’s kindness and love were slowly changing the bad-tempered, untrusting Inuyasha, mending his heart filled with hatred and pain from all the years of mistreatment he had gone through as a hanyou, but she died before she could fully accomplish her mission. Fifty years later, someone else has been given that task, but there’s still another silver-haired youkai who needs Kikyou’s ministrations much more than Inuyasha’s ever did and, by helping said youkai, she would not only give him the love he needs so much, but also heal her own wounded heart with the thrilling touch of another.

In conclusion, Sesshoumaru and Kikyou have all that it takes to be together. They have nearly the same goals and many common aspects in their personalities, and since people tend to feel attracted to those with similar interests, those would be enough to bring the two of them together. However, in spite of their alikeness, one has some characteristics that are just about the opposite of the other’s and, if it’s true that opposites attract, then they would have enough fuel to keep their relationship’s fire always scorching. Furthermore, their strong points, as well as their flaws, would complement each other and form a natural balance, which would be really needed for building their future as a couple.

For those and for other reasons that I might have unintentionally left out, the ever-growing Sessh/Kiky community, as well as myself, support this couple and proudly stand up for it to death. My goal here was to show the skeptical fans that this coupling does have solid reasons to be, unlike other unmentionable pairings that make no sense what-so-ever, and also to try to get people to be more open-minded about this idea, maybe even get them to consider Sesshoumaru and Kikyou as a couple and, who knows, convert them into Sessh/Kiky fans, as I know I have done before. If I have achieved that purpose, only time will tell, but, for now, I’m glad I have tried. Mwah! ^^
